<description>Welcome to my science page :) I graduated from Harvard in 2018 with a B.A. in Astrophysics and Math -- meaning, I learned a lot of wonderful things about subjects such as cosmology, topology, quantum mechanics, abstract algebra, and dynamical systems.
For my Ph.D thesis (advised by Romain Teyssier), I’m exploring a new computational approach to modeling the central kiloparsec (kpc) of very high-redshift galaxies, namely those formed within the first billion years of the Universe. I’ve developed a suite of high-resolution RT-MHD isolated simulations in RAMSES-RT that deliberately focuses on the central gas reservoirs of possible high-redshift galaxy systems. Through examining a wide parameter space of conditions at parsec-scale levels of detail, I aim to capture in a self-consistent model how the nuclear regions of these earliest galaxies can stabilize and evolve, characterize how physical parameters impact observable properties on sub-kpc scales, and enable more detailed comparisons to the exciting ongoing observational discoveries from JWST!
Look around this site to explore some projects of mine, which include
☼ novel subgrid MHD star formation models for cosmological galaxy formation simulations&#38;nbsp;(advised by Romain Teyssier)
☼ characterizing&#38;nbsp;and developing theoretical models for the radio emission of the MASSIVE survey galaxies (advised by&#38;nbsp;Jenny Greene, Kristina Nyland, &#38;amp; Eliot Quataert)☼ and more!&#38;nbsp;＼(˘◡˘)／
As always, I'm happy to answer questions about my science work and can be reached at egirma [at] princeton.edu ~</description>

<description>astrometric detection of intermediate-mass black holes
For my senior thesis, I worked with Professor Avi Loeb at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center of Astrophysics to explore with numerical simulations how we might detect a population of intermediate-mass black holes at the center of the galaxy, using recent advancements in radio astronomy.
I was awarded both the Hoopes Prize and Leo Goldberg Prize in Astronomy for my work on this thesis, and the research was later condensed into a journal article that has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

<description>A new star formation recipe for magnetohydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formationWith Prof. Teyssier, I developed a novel sub-grid recipe for star formation that accounts for the local properties of the sub-grid magnetized ISM turbulence. Compared to its non-magnetized counterpart, our star formation model both suppreses initial starbursts while regulating star formation later on to a nearly constant rate. We also see differences in the local Schmidt law, with a shallower power-law index for the magnetized star formation model. Our results encourage further examination into the notion that magnetic fields are likely to play a non-trivial role in our understanding of star and galaxy formation.

		<description>fragments produced from tidal disruptions
In 2016 I worked with Dr. James Guillochon to study stellar tidal disruptions, and the potential galactic distribution that fragments formed from the gravitational collapse within the tidal stream might possess.
The results of this research were presented in a press conference at the 229th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, and further featured in the National Geographic.

<description>radio emission from MASSIVE survey galaxies
this is currently a work in progress !!&#38;nbsp;this is currently a work in progress !! this is currently a work in progress !! this is currently a work in progress !! this is currently a work in progress !!

I’ve been finishing up a project with Kristina Nyland, Joan Wrobel, and Jenny Greene to characterize the radio emission of galaxies from the MASSIVE survey (Pa et al. 2013). Of the 116 survey galaxies, we targeted 98 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at C-band (4-8 GHz) in the C configuration. These galaxies are&#38;nbsp;nearby (within 108 Mpc) early-type galaxies with stellar-mass ranges of over 1011.5M☉, occupying a critical and as-of-yet systematically unexamined parameter space of massive red galaxies at low redshifts. With this study, and through combining our data with radio observations of the complimentary ATLAS3D sample (Nyland et al. 2015), we aim to provide a robust statistical framework in which to investigate what relationship radio continuum emission might have with ETG properties and their accretion-powered nuclei.

		<description>
Enhancing the Chandra archive with ZTF alert streams through annotation

As a software developer at the Chandra X-ray Observatory I created and now maintain a programmatic interface that enhances the Chandra Data Archive through annotations, which integrate data from optical transient surveys.

Our project was in part motivated by the new window on the transient and variable optical sky, opened by current and upcoming synoptic telescopes. Given that transient and variable events are expected to emit in both the visible and X-ray spectrum, cross-matching and multi-band analysis are particularly salient tools for classifying and characterizing these phenomena.

We also hope that this software will demonstrate a powerful and generalizable approach, for archives to both cater to the new scientific needs of communities they serve and maximize their scientific legacies.
